Shoppers are being invited to add a chat with their local police officer to their shopping list.
Following a request from the Monkseaton branch of Sainsbury’s, Pc Paul McKenzie, from the Whitley Bay Neighbourhood Policing Team, has been holding regular community drop-in sessions at the store.
The sessions have proved to be popular with both customers and staff and gives Pc McKenzie the opportunity to meet members of the local community and answer any concerns they may have about crime and anti-social behaviour in the area.
He is also on hand to offer crime prevention advice.
Pc McKenzie said: “The store is an ideal venue to meet members of the local community.
“Many people have very busy lives and may not have time to attend a meeting to discuss the concerns they have about crime and anti-social behaviour issues but this doesn’t mean they should ignore them.
“These sessions give people the opportunity to stop and have a quick chat about the issues that are affecting them and hear what is being done in the area to make it even safer while they do their shopping.
“As a neighbourhood officer it’s important to go out and speak to people in the local community rather than waiting for them to come to us and holding sessions in locations such as a supermarket gives us the perfect opportunity to do that.
“The store works closely with the local community and we’re grateful for the support they provide in helping us do the same.”
Roger Thompson, store manager, said: “As we operate in the heart of the local community we’re pleased to welcome the local police into our store to host regular drop-in sessions, and I’m sure our customers will find this service useful.”
