The international chairman of a borough based charity has marked the 13th anniversary of an air disaster.

Vishwanath Pullé, from the Angels of the North, officiated at the memorial service for the Air India Disaster in Ireland.

Vishwanath, who lost loved ones himself in the disaster, resolved that a lasting memorial should be created near the shingle beach at Ahakista because it had become a sacred place to thousands of relatives of the dead and he joined others in forming the Kaniska Victims Fund which co-operated with the Canadian, Indian and Irish governments to create a lasting memorial to the victims.

The service was held at a memorial sundial which casts its shadow at 8.13am, the exact moment of the tragedy.
