Metro line re-opens after 15-day closure
A section of the Metro system has re-opened in North Tyneside following a 15-day major line closure.
Work to replace the track between Tynemouth and Shiremoor Metro stations ended on Saturday night, with the line re-opening on Sunday.
Nexus, which owns and manages Metro, has replaced a large section of 50 year-old tracks and track beds.
A total of 3.8 kilometres of track was replaced between Monkseaton and Cullercoats during the March major line closure.
Raymond Johnstone, director of rail and infrastructure for Nexus, said: “I’d like to thank our customers and our line-side neighbours for their patience during the disruption.
“The line re-opened on Sunday and Metro services are now operating as usual between Tynemouth and Shiremoor.
“This was a major programme of investment in new tracks. Work on this scale on the Metro system happens once in a generation and it is helping to secure to Metro’s future for many decades come.”
A second 15 day major line closure is planned for Saturday, July 23, to Saturday, August 6, between Benton and Whitley Bay.
Modernisation works on the line will also take place during a series of weekend closures and also at night, during Metro’s track access hours.
