With both sides languishing at the foot of the Northumberland & Tyneside Cricket League Division Six (South) table, each was looking for a morale-boosting win at Churchill Playing Fields.

Blyth were without a win all season while Monkseaton 2nds’ sole victory of the campaign had come in the previous meeting between the sides.

Skipper Garry Benns won the toss and put the visitors into bat. A tight opening bowling spell from John Hewett (1-21) and Ian McDine meant Blyth found runs difficult to come by in the early stages b before the introduction of fast bowler David Gowar (3-26) paid dividends.

Blyth, however, stuck to the task and an unbeaten 48 from Steven Tarn and a useful 30 from Alfie Clark in the middle order saw they post a challenging 152-7 at the end of their 40 overs.

The visitors’ hopes of a victory rose when they dismissed Benns and fellow experienced opener Bob Zanetti early in the chase.

But that brought wicketkeeper Dave Turnbull and Tony Lion together at the crease and the pair shared an unbroken century stand to see Monkseaton to their victory target with eight overs to spare.

Following an unbeaten 83 last week, Turnbull produced another fine knock, finishing on 69 not out. Lion remained 55 not out.

The result gave Monkseaton 28 points and lifts them to seventh in the table. The 2nds are without a game this weekend but will hope to gain confidence from this result for the remainder of the season.

* The 1st XI had a blank weekend in the fixture calendar and results elsewhere saw them drop out of the top two promotion places in Division Six (North).

Skipper Mark Tunstall’s side return to action on Saturday when they host Warkworth 2nd XI at Churchill (1pm start).

* The club hosts net practice for senior players every Tuesday from 6.30pm at Churchill Playing Fields. New members are always welcome to attend.
