A North Shields teenager has become one of the youngest ever members of the Shields Ferry crew.
Nathan Williamson, 19, has joined as second mate, following a successful interview.
Nathan becomes the second youngest person to work on the cross-Tyne ferry service since Nexus took it over in 1972.
“I’m really pleased to have this opportunity to work on the ferries. I’m loving it. I love working on the river,” said Nathan, who is already a volunteer for the Tynemouth Lifeboat.
Over the next few months Nathan will be taught how to drive the vessels, before sitting his Boat Master’s Licence – the maritime equivalent of a driving test.
“I’m just thrilled that I got the job,” said Nathan. “I was told I’m the second youngest person to join the crew. It’s a huge honour for me.”
