New exhibition on the impact of war

The effect of the Second World War and its immediate aftermath on the lives of people in North Tyneside will be told through photographs and a 30-minute audio recording of people sharing memories in a special audio visual exhibition.

Alison Spedding’s Distant Voices exhibition will take place at Newcastle City Library from Friday, August 8, to Wednesday, August 13.

In stark contrast to modern day life, the exhibition ‘voices’ talk about rationing, evacuation, entertainment, boys and men that went to fight, fathers that went to war and who were strangers to their young children when they returned home, tales of National Service, and how the bombing in North Tyneside affected everyday lives. Alison said: “The ‘Distant Voices’ are symbolic of an age and a time that is fast receding from human memory.”
