A £35,000 investment package has breathed new life into a Whitley Bay scout headquarters.
Brand new fixtures and fittings have replaced tired kitchen units, old toilets and a lack of hot water to attract wider community use of the building in Links Road, Cullercoats.
And the fundraising drive was boosted by a £1,000 donation from Procter and Gamble’s Employees’ Charity Fund.
The 5th Whitley Bay (St George’s Scout Group) – with 85 cubs, beavers and scouts in its ranks – use their headquarters weekly and helped raise the funds for the refits by packing bags at supermarkets and gaining other charity backing.
Caroline Charlton, group scout leader, said: “This work has made the building far more modern; many of the fittings were about 50-years-old and we needed to modernise it.
“We’ve installed disabled access and a toilet for the disabled in an effort to encourage the wider community to use the building more.”
P&G employee and cubs leader Michelle Mobberley said: “Our cubs have all said how much more colourful and nice the building is now.”
