Directors, senior managers and staff from Nexus are pictured with representatives from Tyneside and Northumberland Mind.

Inside each pass holder is a leaflet outlining six ways to promote mental health and well-being.

Metro customers can pick up one of the colourfully branded travel wallets from any Nexus travel shop, including the one in North Shields, for a £2 minimum donation.

Proceeds go to Tyneside and Northumberland Mind, which is the charity that Nexus workers have chosen to support in 2018.

The scheme was the brainchild of staff at the Haymarket Metro station travel shop.

The staff originally wanted to use their own money to get the pass holders made, but the management team at Nexus felt it was such a great idea that the firm stepped in to support the fund-raising initiative.

Alex Wilson, CEO of Tyneside and Northumberland Mind, said: “We are delighted to be working with Nexus as their charity of the year.

“Too many people who struggle with their mental health are not able to live fulfilled lives as they are scared to speak about how they feel, according to the Mental Health Foundation.

“It is one of our aims to raise awareness of mental health and the issues people may face, so people are no longer afraid of talking about them.

“The travel wallet idea is a unique and innovative way to fund-raise for us, linking the benefits of getting out and about in our local region and the positive impact this can have on your mental health.”
