The work, which is being carried out by contractor Lumsden & Carroll, will help to protect homes and business in north Cullercoats and some areas of Whitley Bay from flooding.
More than 1.2km of drainage will be upgraded by increasing the size of the existing sewer network and installing new surface water pipes.
On the community portal, www.nw-northcullercoatsproject.co.uk, residents will be able to find project related news, check traffic management and receive general information and support throughout the scheme.
Meshi Taka, project liaison officer, said: “We are committed to reducing the risk of flooding to our customer’s homes and businesses in the north Cullercoats area.
“We put customer service at the heart of our business and the new Northumbrian Water community portal is a great place to go to for advice and to find out how the work in this area is progressing.”
This sewer network upgrade is one of dozens of improvement programmes by Northumbrian Water, which is investing £180m on essential improvements each year from 2015 to 2020.
The water company will continue to maintain and improve drinking water quality, to protect the environment and to deliver top customer service to its 2.7 million customers in the north east.
