North East employment rate hits record high
The North East employment rate is at a record high, new figures reveal.
The data, released today by the Office for National Statistics, show that more than 1.2million people are in work in the region. Compared to this time last year, there are 36,000 more people in work in the North East.
Employment Minister Damian Hinds said: "We’re determined to make Britain a country that works for everyone, not just the privileged few. This includes helping more people of all ages and abilities to get into, and stay in work. There’s great news in the North East where the employment rate is at a record high of 70.9 per cent with over 1.2million people in work. Clearly, good progress has been made, and I’m encouraged to take forward the agenda to create an even more resilient labour market."
It comes as the employment rate in the UK is at a record high of 74.4 per cent and the unemployment rate is at its lowest in over 10 years at 4.9 per cent. Today's figures show that there is a record 31.7million people now in work – up by 624,000 in the past year and over 2.6million since 2010.
