North Shields Crusaders warm up for cup final with big win in friendly
North Shields Crusaders warmed up for next week's County Cup final with a match against Chester-le-Street 2nds.
Chris Allott returned from injury and led the side from the back row. Adam Eglin was in at scrum-half with Richard Sampson moving to the centre.
Chester-le-Street were short so North Shields gave them six players to give them a full side, including a first match of the season for Gary Crombie at full-back.
The first try for the home side came from winger Joe Mehaffey before two tries from Richard Sampson, Jack Jeffrey added the conversion to the first for a 17-0 lead.
Allott scored the final try of the first half under the posts, with Jeffrey adding the extras to give an interval score of 24-0.
In the second half Crusaders continued to dominate. Pete Dyers and Kyle Wharton both scored, with Jeffrey adding one conversion to make it 36-0.
A try for replacement flanker Tony Cottiss, a second for Allott and a score from Ian Swinbank extended the lead, with Jeffrey adding conversions to all three tries.
Next to score was scrum-half Ryan Ramsey, converted by Jeffrey, before Sampson completed his hat-trick to make the final score 69-0 to the hosts.
Man of the match was awarded to second row Dave Griffith-Owen. Thanks went to Chester-le-Street for travelling without a full side for the fixture.
The first team travelled to Ashbrooke to take on Sunderland. They lost 29-21 but put in a creditable performance with tries from Mark Hall (2) and Ben Dalton, Gavin Duffy adding the three conversions.
Next week Crusaders are in action against Morpeth Stags for the Northumberland Junior Shield. The match takes place at Medicals RFC and kicks-off at 2pm.
The first team are on the road again and travel to Seaton Carew.
