North Shields family get on their bikes for charity
A family are gearing up for an epic challenge in memory of a lost loved one.
Andrew McManus, from North Shields, is taking part in the London to Paris bike ride to thank St Oswald’s Hospice, which supported his brother David after he was diagnosed with a brain tumour.
Andrew, 49, will be joined by his children Natalie, 28, and Andrew, 24.
They will set off from London on Wednesday and are expected to arrive in Paris on Sunday.
David, who was a keen cyclist, first attended the hospice for pain and symptom management in October 2016, later returning to St Oswald’s where he died in April 2017.
The ride is one of a number of fundraising events by ‘Team McManus’, with others including an afternoon tea, art auction and disco, while Andrew will take part in the Great North Run in September.
He said: “St Oswald’s gave Dave such wonderful care, I owe it to him and St Oswald’s to give something back. Dave was a cyclist himself so he’d be so proud of us doing something like this.
“As it’s approaching I’m beginning to feel nervous as it’s such a big challenge, but it’s something we are all looking forwarding to doing together. We’ve tried to get out training together, sometimes for a run near the coast where we live. The longest bike ride I have done so far is 50 miles and we’ll be completing about 90 miles in the first day.
“I always promised the kids that I’d take them to Euro Disney, which is something we never got around to, so it’s nice to all be going to Paris.”
He added: “Last month we organised a fundraising event at Tynemouth Cricket Club. We had an afternoon tea, art auction and a disco, raising £2,200 for St Oswald’s.
“It was a special fundraiser for the family, made extra special by the fact that Dave was a member of the cricket club and the next day would have been his birthday so I stayed at the club until midnight to have a drink for him.
“As well as the fundraiser, myself and Dave’s wife Claire took part in the North Tyneside 10k and I will be running for St Oswald’s later this year in the Great North Run. The family is also taking part in St Oswald’s memory walk, The Lantern Walk, for the second year this June.”
