Nothing rubbish about bin offers

Residents are being offered a deal for home composting bins to encourage them to do more with their waste.

North Tyneside Council has teamed up with to offer the bins at a subsided price.

Usually £39, residents living in the borough are being offered the bins at a discounted price, starting from £17.

There is also a buy one, get one half price offer.

Coun John Harrison, cabinet member for housing and the environment, said: “We’re working really hard to encourage residents to think carefully about the things they throw away and the impact it can have on the environment – and home composting is a great way to help.

“It’s easy and helps to significantly reduce carbon emissions, as well as having many other benefits like improving soil quality and suppressing plant disease.

“And with autumn upon us, the time has come to prune, trim and prepare the garden for next year and what could be better than recycling it all to make top quality, organic compost.”

Waste can be thrown into a compost bin and over the winter months it will rot down to produce an environmentally friendly compost that when added to the garden will suppress weeds and retain moisture in the drier months.
