Older people in need of support

A COUPLE of weeks ago I was asked by a resident of Deepdale Road, Cullercoats, to sign a petition (Grey Pride) organised by Anchor Housing calling for the government to appoint a dedicated Minister for Older People.

Grey Pride is the Anchor Housing campaign to get the voices of older people to be heard at the very highest level with a centralised government portfolio that prioritise their needs and ensures their views receive dedicated attention.

I was delighted sign and offered to take a copy to try and get more people to sign, I managed to get another 68 signatures.

The resident stressed that older people are fast becoming one of the largest groups in the country, making up 40 per cent of voters.

I truly believe that older people deserve to be treated with dignity and respect in old age and I believe it is important to safeguard these principles by providing the necessary support.

Like many, I believe creating a dedicated minister will ensure older people are represented at the highest level and enjoy dignity and respect in their later years.

This was made even more apparent after my recent visit to a coffee morning held in Victoria Court Sheltered Housing Scheme, Cullercoats.

I spent about 30 minutes chatting to residents on a whole host of issues including the regeneration of Cullercoats and their forthcoming Christmas party, which I am sure shall be a tremendous success.
