Shoppers showed off their fancy footwork at a special event to celebrate Father’s Day and the European Championships.

The Beacon centre, in North Shields, and Wallsend’s The Forum partnered with Lucozade Powerleague Soccerdome North Shields to treat fathers and their children to free football skills sessions that included skills drills, tips and tricks.

Centre staff joined in the fun by handing out free England flags and football-themed treats.

A grand prize was also up for grabs at each centre, courtesy of JD Sports, for the most active parent and child team.

At The Beacon, Carly, eight, and Luke, nine, who participated in the activity with their mum Michaela Syverson won a range of sports goodies from JD Sports and at The Forum, son Aaran, six, and his dad Amit Goel were awarded a gift card worth £50.

Children proudly supported their favourite teams on the opening day of Euro 2016 with a choice of football themed face painting which helped raise almost £200 for the One Great Day campaign which supports the Great Ormond Street children’s hospital and local charity The Children’s Foundation.

Nick Lambert, centre manager, The Forum Shopping Centre, said: “It was fantastic to see the community, especially children and their dads, coming together over their love of football.

“We really enjoyed handing out football themed gifts to shoppers and were impressed by the effort shown by both children and dads.”

David Menzies, centre manager at The Beacon Shopping Centre, said: “There was such a great atmosphere in the centre, and we were delighted to see so many children with their faces painted to show their support for their favourite teams. I am really proud of the community as they made the event even more special by giving generously to support the One Great Day charity campaign.”
