Online help on offer to tackle crime

AN online neighbourhood watch scheme has been launched in Cullercoats.

Villagers are being called on by police to join the scheme, so they can help keep their properties, and those of their neighbours, safe without having to attend meetings or take part in patrols.

This latest crime prevention initiative is open to people living on the Marden Estate and Preston Grange in North Shields as well as Cullercoats itself.

To join in, residents just need to send an e-mail with their home or work address to and they will then start to receive crime prevention information.

Similar schemes are already up and running elsewhere in North Tyneside.

Inspector Jim Gray, pictured, of Whitley Bay’s neighbourhood policing team, said: “We want to work with local residents to further reduce crime and disorder, and a virtual neighbourhood watch scheme is a quick and easy way to do so.

“Online watch schemes provide a swift and effective means for local officers to communicate with their community.

“Members receive regular updates via e-mail about local incidents and advice about how to keep their property safe and secure.”
