Barry Stewart has stood down after five seasons in charge after taking the Villagers out of division A2 in 2014 and establishing the club as a top six side in division A1.

Taking his place is opening batsmen David Anderson.

There have also been additions to the playing squad with Australian Sam Berridge, an all rounder from Cowarump CC in Perth, as overseas player, as well as his teammate Adrian Woodward.

Experienced seamer Jon Nicholls has joined the club from Felling CC.

These three signings will strengthen and compliment the seam options already offered by vice-captain Andrew Green, Amit Sunda and Stewart.

Anderson is delighted by the new signings and is looking forward to the new season starting.

He said: “The club is buzzing with excitement right now and are looking to build on a strong 2016 season.

“Having Will Taylor available batting at No. 3 for the full season will help strengthen our batting into a very strong unit.

“We have a good mix of young, local players and experienced cricketers in the team.”

Anderson is looking to improve on last season’s sixth place finish and has targeted a cup run.

“We are hoping to push for a top five finish and hope for a good cup run too,” he said.

“You never know, with a bit of luck and if the younger players like Phil Cramman, Michael Boyd, James Stanistreet and Dan McGee play to their potential, we could bring home some silverware.”

The club are also looking to upgrade its practice facilities and have applied for assistance to install a two lane practice net before the end of the summer, which will provide first class facilities for members.

Anyone interested in joining the club should either attend net practice on Thursday night’s at 6pm or contact Paddy Rathbone on 07795 220146.

Meanwhile, bathroom company Crossling has been announced as the club’s main sponsor for the forthcoming season.

Les Ferguson, sales manager for Crossling, said he was delighted to announce the new partnership.

He said: “It is great to be able to give something back in to the local community and in partnership with Ideal Standard Bathrooms, Wavin plumbing products and Salamander Pumps, Crossling are very proud to be the main sponsors.

“At Crossling we pride ourselves on our customer service and have a broad product range which is suitable for both trade and retail customers.”

Crossling’s bathroom showroom is located just off the Coast Road in Newcastle.
