Two volunteers have been commended for their commitment in helping young people.
Steve Cavanagh, 53, of Killingworth, and Father Martin Lee, 48, of Benton, both received a Certificate of Meritorious Service for their roles with the Air Cadet Organisation at 2344 (Longbenton) Squadron.

Steve is the squadron’s STEM officer and has led the young cadets to gain and apply science, technology, engineering and mathematical knowledge in a practical learning environment.
He said: “It was very surprising to receive the award.
“It’s great to be recognised for doing something that I enjoy but it is a testament to the squadron to allow me to be recognised to receive such an award.”
Farther Martin has served on the squadron for almost seven years and has assisted in the implementation of an integrated Leadership and Citizenship Programme.
He said: “It was a wonderful surprise to be recognised by the organisation and it was rather emotional to have received it during the Service.”
Officer Commanding, Flight Lieutenant Gary Richardson said: “Both Steve and Martin thoroughly deserve the award and recognition.
“I’m very proud to have them as part of our team and thank them both for their hard work, selfless dedication and commitment in supporting the young people who we are here to serve in such engaging enterprises.”
