Work has begun on the £3m project at the Park Hotel Tynemouth.

The first phase, costing £2.5m, began this year and has seen all 55 en-suite bedrooms and bathrooms extensively refurbished, as well as the construction of a new restaurant and kitchen.

The rooms in the hotel now pay homage to its Art Deco roots.

The new restaurant – called The Salt Cove and the brainchild of an award-winning designer – also combines the style of the 1930s with a contemporary look. Its original ceiling has been restored and the extensive dining area features exposed brick and wood.

Diners will sit in comfort in booths as they enjoy food prepared in a state-of-the-art kitchen.

There will also be a beer garden at the front to allow guests, passing cyclists and dog walkers to enjoy a drink and a stunning view out to sea.

The hotel, built in the 1930s, will re-open later this summer. The project will be completed with £500,000 spent on the reception area and the hotel’s ballroom.

The number of staff will be trebled and next year a conference and banqueting team will also be recruited.

Kara Beecroft, sales and marketing manager, said: “We already have a stunning location and we are creating the facilities and top quality service to match.

“Whether you are staying in the hotel, visiting for a meal or drink, holding your wedding reception or staging a major conference, The Park Hotel will serve your needs.”

She added: “The team behind the hotel’s transformation has worked incredibly hard and we are all so proud of what has already been achieved and what we expect will be achieved in the coming months and years.

“We’ll attract visitors and events from the rest of the UK and beyond, and local residents – as they have throughout the history of The Park Hotel Tynemouth – will look to us for their special occasions.”
