Work has taken place to restore an important nesting site for seabirds.
It was carried out on the Tern Island, at Swallow Pond in the Rising Sun Country Park, Waalsend, just in time for the nesting season.
It was hard work getting the island secured on windy day and I was covered with mud in the end, but we are really pleased with the result.Simon Laing, of Cullercoats Bike and Kayak
The island, originally installed six years ago and popular with seabirds including Arctic terns, needed to be repaired to keep it afloat and to renew the nesting materials on the island.
Cullercoats Bike and Kayak was invited to help with the work.
Simon Laing, of Cullercoats Bike and Kayak, said: “In a previous life I was a marine biologist so I readily offered to help. It was hard work getting the island secured on windy days and I was covered with mud in the end, but we are really pleased with the result.”
Rising Sun land officer Chris Tallack said: “We could not have reinstated the island without help. Using Simon’s expert kayaking skills, we took the island out to the middle of Swallow Pond and secured it.”
“We are now delighted it is back in place ready for the terns to begin to nest again this summer.”
