Passengers reminded about Metro line closure
Metro passengers are reminded that a major part of the line in North Tyneside will be closed for two weeks from Saturday.
Nexus, which manages the Tyne and Wear Metro, is to start a multi-million pound programme of track replacement work.
As a result, the line will be closed between Tynemouth and Shiremoor from Saturday until Saturday, April 2.
A frequent replacement bus service, the number 900, will be running in the affected area.
The work, which forms part of the £350m Metro all change modernisation programme, will involve the replacement of track and tracks beds which are more than 50 years old.
Raymond Johnstone, director of rail and infrastructure for Nexus, said: “This is the next major piece of track replacement work in our £350m Metro modernisation programme.
“We are replacing tracks and track beds which are more than 50 years old on Metro’s North Tyneside coastal loop.
“It is a once in a generation piece of work to ensure Metro is here for many decades to come.
“The work can only be done by closing lines. It will mean some disruption for passengers and I apologise in advance if anyone is inconvenienced.
“The work is absolutely vital so that we can modernise key sections of Metro infrastructure.
“When the lines are closed customers will be provided with a high frequency replacement bus service and they will just be two or three stops away from linking back into the Metro system for trains heading into Newcastle and other destinations.”
A second 15 day major line closure is scheduled for Saturday, July 23, to Saturday, August 6, between Benton and Whitley Bay.
Modernisation work has already been taking place on the line during a series of weekend closures and also at night.
A total of 3.8 kilometres of track will be replaced between Monkseaton and Cullercoats during the March major line closure.
Then another 3.7 kilometres of track will be replaced between Monkseaton and Northumberland Park in the July closure period.
A total of 8.7 kilometres of track will be replaced in North Tyneside during 2016.
Nexus has already sent letters to over 3,000 households in North Tyneside to make residents aware of the forthcoming works.
It will also carry out public drop in sessions for people to find out more about the project.
Nexus previously replaced six kilometres of track between Wallsend and Tynemouth during 2011 and 2012.
