Whitley Bay Rotary Club organised for Santa to visit Park View Shopping Mall, in the town, on a number of occasions over the Christmas period.

As well as youngsters giving Santa their requests for Christmas, families were also able to donate money in a wishing well.

And the club’s Santa Martin and officials have thanked those who visited and made generous donations.

In total, more than £1,600 was raised for local charities and good causes, which the club will be able to distribute over the coming months.

Santa Martin said: “It was wonderful to see so many children and to hear all their ‘hopeful’ requests from the sublime to the impossible!

“And I’m sorry that I couldn’t make them come true.

“In the meantime until we meet again, our thanks to all those who made a donation from the spare coppers in their purses to the pounds in their wallets.

“Thank you. Your generosity knew no bounds.”

Rod Clark, president of Whitley Bay Rotary Club, said: “ All of the many Rotarians who supported Santa over the month of December, would wish you all the very best for 2020 and look forward to meeting some of you again when we are out and about on our travels in North Tyneside.”
