Royal Quays Marina was named Marina of the Year at The Yacht Harbour Association 2019 awards after being voted for by its berth holders as well as visiting sailors from across the country.

After being runner-up in the awards in 2015 and 2018, taking the crown in the ‘Coastal, over 250 berths category’ has put the wind in the sails of manager Matt Simms.

Matt said: “Having an award voted for by the people who use marinas across the country means the world to us.

“There are bigger, busier marinas than us but to know there are so many people who have visited us who feel motivated to vote for us is a great feeling.

“After being a runner up twice makes this even more special – it is fantastic to finally get top spot and also to have the North East recognised as a great place to sail.”

The marina, which employs 11 staff and has 350 berths, welcomes visitors from across Europe – including France, Belgium, Germany and Holland – and has ‘resident’ berths from all over the North of England.

In 2017 the marina was awarded 5 gold anchors, the top rating for marinas accredited under the scheme in which more than 100 UK marinas participate.

Amongst other services the Royal Quays offers customers a boat yard, lift-out facilities, fuel and is open 24 hours a day.

Matt, who was presented with the award at Southampton Boat Show, added: “All the staff work really hard to provide a marina which we can be proud of, with the service to match.

“We have a fantastic marina, but what really makes it is the people: those who work here, and our loyal berth holders, visitors and other users all of whom combine to create a wonderful marina community.”

The marina is a member of the North Shields Business Chamber, which has more than 140 members and is the voice of business in the town.

Chair Miles Walton said: “The marina is part of a fantastic, diverse offering in North Shields and this award is well-deserved.

“It is obviously at the top of its game and it is great we have a marina of this calibre in the town. This award proves it really is first-class.”
