Northumberland Retail Park, near Shiremoor, is taking a major step forward this summer after Northumberland Estates’ latest deals with two major national retailers following confirmation of full planning permission.

Retailer B&M is taking over a 23,982sq ft space with ancillary garden centre while JD Gyms will occupy a new high specification 25,973sq ft facility.

They will join exisiting retailers Toby Cavery, Aldi and a drive through Costa at the retail park.

It follows 12 months of extensive work by the property company to expand the retail park, which it believes will become a key North East retail destination.

Anthony Cape, asset manager at Northumberland Estates, said: “Shiremoor and the surrounding area is an increasingly desirable residential location and there are currently around 750 homes under construction with a further 2,000 planned on land next to Northumberland Retail Park.

“The ease of access to the A19 makes it a very popular position for a wide range of retailers and leisure operators.

“We are confident that we can build on our recent success to establish Northumberland Park as one of the region’s major retail destinations.”

Three further retail warehouse units which have the potential to provide an additional 25,000sq ft are in the pipeline and currently being marketed by Barker Proudlove and Savills.

Mark Proudlove, director at Barker Proudlove said: “The retail sector is going through a period of transition at the moment and the high street in particular is having a difficult time.

“However, retail parks such as Northumberland Park are proving to be an attractive proposition thanks to their ease of access and the ability for developers to provide modern open plan units which can be customised to suit individual occupier requirements.”

Steve Henderson, director at Savills, added: “Construction of the next phase of development is underway with completion expected in Autumn 2019.

“We will be looking to identify a high calibre of retail and leisure occupier who can complement the existing tenant mix at Northumberland Park.”
