Coxed four, sweep sprint races of 300m were fought out between the magnificent Royal Border Bridge viaduct and the host’s, Berwick Amateur Rowing Club’s boathouse, a listed building dating back to 1869.

Tynemouth Rowing Club were represented by two crews, a ladies’ team, The Gulls, and a men’s, Life’s a Beach.

Sixteen crews altogether from Berwick, Tynemouth, Tees, Durham, Chester-le-Street, Tyne United, Tyne RC, and Hexham competed in near perfect conditions, which saw The Gulls get off to a near perfect start, convincingly winning their first two races, only to be narrowly defeated in races three and four.

The two points picked up by The Gulls keeps them in touch with leaders Durham.

The men’s crew failed to register a point in all four races, despite pushing the opposing teams all the way to the finish, limited practice sessions a telling factor for the crew of sculling rowers.

The series alternates between sculling events, two blades per rower and sweep events, one blade per rower.

Tynemouth row using the sculling technique as this is more stable in the coastal conditions at the club.

The Gulls were crewed by Kerry Jordan, Allison Hepburn, Monica Buckland, Catherine Molyneux and guest cox Angela Harrison.

The men were crewed by Steve Dunn, Mark Hyson, Michael Orr, Allan Brownrigg, Paul McCalvey and Chris McGuire, with Paul and Chris sharing the coxing duties.

Next month’s Explore Rowing Sunday League will see Tynemouth Rowing Club host a series of sea sculling races in the coxed quads. This will take place at the Tynemouth Haven alongside the North Pier.

Tynemouth Rowing Club welcomes new members from beginners to experienced rowers, as well as coaches and coxes.
