Police issue warning over bogus callers

Another elderly resident has been targeted by bogus callers.

Suspected bogus builders attended an address off the A192 near Preston Park in North Shields at 1.50pm on Monday, February 9.

Two men called at the door of the man in his 80s and offered to do roofing work for £60. They left with the cash without carrying out any work.

One is described as white, aged 35 to 40, with short, dark brown hair and was wearing a light brown coloured jacket.

The second man was aged between 17 and 20, of medium build, shaved brown hair and wearing a dark jacket.

DS Simon Gilhespy, of North Shields CID, said: “I’d appeal for anyone who saw these two men in the area to get in touch.

“We’ve carried out house to house enquiries and it appears the men knocked on several doors and may be connected to similar reports in Cullercoats.

“It’s a timely reminder for people to be vigilant. Never agree to work being done by anyone who cold calls at your address and don’t hand over cash on the doorstep.

“Any genuine caller will be willing to come back while you check their credentials.”

“Make sure you look out for elderly relatives and neighbours as it’s the most vulnerable in our communities who are often targeted. I’d like to reassure residents we’re carrying out extra patrols in the area and are making enquiries to trace these men.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101 ext 69191, quoting reference 582 09/02/15, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
