Police have named a man found dead in a Whitley Bay house.

Ian Hardy, 68, was found with a stab wound inside a house in Collingwood Road, Wellfield, at 11.18pm on Friday.

Enquiries to establish how he died are ongoing and the death continues to be treated as unexplained.

Senior Investigating Officer, Detective Chief Inspector John Bent, said: “This death is currently being treated as unexplained and the purpose of our investigation is to find out what has caused this man’s death.

“At the current time we are keeping an open mind as to what has happened but we do believe this is an isolated incident and there is not thought to be any risk to the wider public.”

Two people – a woman in her 70s and man in his 30s – had been assisting police with their enquiries.

Extra officers were in the area to carry out enquiries and speak with local residents as well as offer reassurance to those who are concerned.
