A popular ice cream parlour and cafe has been shortlisted for a host of awards.

Di Meo’s Ice Cream, in Whitley Bay, has picked up three nominations in the second English Italian Awards.

The popular family-run establishment, on Marine Avenue, has won numerous awards in the past for its ice creams.

Thousands of venues battled it out to make it to the shortlist to be named the country’s favourite Italian restaurants, pizzerias, cafes and businesses.

This year’s awards are being supported by the Italian Chamber of Commerce and Industry for the UK.

Di Meo’s has been shortlisted in the Best Barista, Best Deli/Cafe, and Best Gelateria categories.

Independent judges will now be heading out to those shortlisted venues, with all winners to be revealed at the Gala Final in Manchester on September 18.

Awards chief executive and founder Warren Paul said: “It is incredible to see the support and appreciation for Italian businesses throughout England.

“This year we had nominations from across the country, from Falmouth to Carlisle and Brighton to Newcastle.

“It’s a huge opportunity for our finalists to showcase their dedication and talent, particularly those attending the live-cook offs with Aldo Zilli.”

More than 600 people are expected to attend glitzy black-tie ceremony in Manchester, with money raised on the night supporting the charity The Children’s Adventure Farm Trust.
