Praise for borough shops during police firework op

SHOPS in North Tyneside have been priased by police after a succesful fireworks operation.

The Whitley Bay neighbourhood policing team worked with North Tyneside Council Trading Standards in a test purchase operation, sending an underage girl into 11 local shops to buy fireworks.

Whitley Bay neighbourhood Sergeant Mal Wallace said: “All 11 shops refused to sell fireworks to the girl which was an excellent result.

“It is an offence to sell fireworks to anyone under 18 and all these stores took the right action.

“We hope their actions will be followed by other retailers and we will continue working with Trading Standards and our other partners to ensure the law is upheld for everyone’s safety.”

Morrisons in Hillheads Road; the Sainsbury’s stores in Newsteads Drive and The Broadway and the One Stop stores in Seatonville Road and St George’s Road, all Whitley Bay, the Aldi stores in Tynemouth Road and Wiltshire Drive; Asda in Hadrian Road; News Plus at The Forum Shopping Centre; One Stop on the Coast Road and Bagria Stores in Archer Street, all Wallsend, also refused to sell the girl fireworks.
