Pulling in the right direction

STUDENTS pulled out all the stops to book their places at a regional sports event.

The Tyne and Wear Indoor Rowing Competition saw more than 200 children taking part in individual challenges, with the North Tyneside team winning five out eight gold medals up for grabs.

And the winners will now represent Tyne and Wear at the north east finals in Stockton on Thursday, March 24.

There were eight categories overall, with boys and girls competing separately in time trials for Years 7 to 10.

The winners from the borough were: Callum Hutchinson, in Year 7 at Churchill Community College, Wallsend; Holly Fletcher, Year 7, Jack Tait and Emily Bethan, both in Year 8, and all at Valley Gardens Middle in Whitley Bay; and Tom Donohoe, Year 9 at John Spence Community High, in North Shields.

The youngsters won their place in the Tyne and Wear finals after their success at the North Tyneside Indoor Rowing Event in January.

Coun Glynis Barrie, cabinet member for community services, said: “I’m delighted for the North Tyneside team, who performed brilliantly on the day.

“When they took part in the North Tyneside Indoor Rowing event, many of the pupils were trying the activity for the first time.

“This is what our Widening Horizons 4 Sport initiative is all about, and having been given the opportunity, the youngsters have certainly made the most of it.

“I’d like to wish them the best of luck in the north east finals, where I’m sure they’ll do us proud once again.”
