A STUDENT from North Tyneside has been named as a National Junior Indoor Rowing Champion.
Alex Booth, a Year 8 pupil at Valley Gardens Middle School, was awarded the title at the National Junior Indoor Rowing Championships at Lee Valley Athletic Centre, London on Friday March 23.
The annual tournament – hosted by London Youth Rowing – is one of the biggest indoor rowing events in the world.
Alex secured his champion’s title by rowing a record-beating 890 metres in just three minutes - also beating his own previous personal best of 874 metres in three minutes. He is now officially the National Junior Indoor Rowing Champion, Year 8 boys.
Jan Reed, Deputy Headteacher at Valley Gardens Middle School said: “The school has an active rowing team and has already experienced success at regional level, but Alex is the first rower from the school to reach a national final, for which he trained really hard. Everyone is delighted with Alex’s well deserved success.
Alex said: “I started indoor rowing in school when I was in Year 7 and enjoyed it straight away. The competition was pretty tough, but I enjoyed it. I now want to work on bringing my outdoor rowing to the same standard.”
