Artistic students have taken a step back in time for a unique competition.
Staff at the Old Low Light Heritage Centre, on North Shields Fish Quay, were inspired by the iconic tourism paintings produced for British Railways between the 1920s and 1940s to highlight key places to visit.
Students studying fine art at TyneMet College’s creative studios were tasked with designing a painting to represent North Shields in the spirit of the earlier images, and the winning painting will be used to help promote North Shields on posters and postcards.
The finished paintings are on display in the Heritage Centre until May 19. The exhibition is open to the public who can vote for their favourite.
Pearl Saddington, centre manager, said: “We’re always looking for local and unique products for our gift shop and railway art has always had a strong commercial aspect.”
“When researching vintage railway posters, we decided it would be good to create one to reflect the dynamic and changing face of North Shields as an up and coming tourist destination.
“I was aware of the huge amount of artistic talent being nurtured by Tyne Met’s Creative Studios and thought what better way to introduce their students to the commercial world.
“The artwork, which is on view in our Heritage Gallery, is creating quite an impact with visitors who all have their own favourites.”
Doctor John O’Rourke, programme leader in HE Fine Art at TyneMet College’s Creative Studios, said: “We’ve been impressed with the standard of the paintings produced by our students and have already received some great feedback from members of the public who have visited the exhibition.
“The course aims at preparing students for future art commissions and exhibitions, so this is a perfect example of the kind of live projects that we offer.”
Sandra Earl, lecturer in art and design, said: “We are proud to be working in partnership with the iconic Old Low Light Heritage Centre for this competition and hope to help bring to life the beauty and rich heritage of the North Shields Fish Quay and also highlight it is a key travel destination.
