Children were soaring after celebrating the opening of their school’s new play area.
Newcastle Eagles’ star Darius Defoe was guest of honour to perform the official opening at Star of the Sea RC Primary School, in Whitley Bay.
He also answered pupils’ questions and handed out tickets to an Eagles match.
The new equipment – including a wooden catboat, new seating areas, hang out area, wall games, basketball hoop and pop up football goals – was paid for thanks to the fundraising efforts of the Friends of Star of the Sea.
All the installations were undertaken by Whitley Bay man Matt Leach, who owns Bigfellers.
Kathryn DiMambro, deputy headteacher, said: “We would like to thank Darius for coming into school and to all the parents who helped to make the changes to the outdoor area possible.”
