HUNDREDS of pupils gave rugby a try as a festival came to the coast.

More than 250 pupils from eight schools in the borough took part in a Year 4 Tag Rugby Tournament which was organised by Newcastle Falcons and hosted by The King’s School in Tynemouth.

The event was held at Priors Park, in Tynemouth, with King’s young official award referees from Year 10 refereeing all the games.

The aim of the tournament was to give Year 3 and Year 4 boys and girls an enjoyable opportunity to compete against other schools after training all season.

Six different groups each fielded five teams and more than 100 games of tag rugby were played with Percy Main Junior School finishing as the overall winners.

King’s Head of PE and Games Rob Snow said: “The event was very successful.

“It was fantastic to see so many young people playing tag rugby so passionately. Boys and girls were able to compete together developing their running and handling skills, as well as teamwork.

“There were some excellent games and everyone thoroughly enjoyed the day especially when Flash appeared to cheer them all on.”
