RECYCLING: Accept more items in bins

I don't understand why North Tyneside councillors believe that moving to fortnightly bin collections will increase the council's recycling rate, (News Guardian, June 28).

In 2016/17, the council had an abysmal recycling rate of 35.2 per cent, compared with a figure of 66.6 per cent for South Oxfordshire.

The only way for the council to boost the recycling rate is to accept more items. If Sainsbury’s can accept yoghurt pots and margarine pots for recycling, why can’t the council?

I always respect the rules about what is allowed in bins, but my late wife always put all her recyclable plastic into the recycling bin, and now I find that two friends in Friends of the Earth do the same.

Would it be irresponsible of me to suggest that the public should follow suit?

If enough of us do it, it may jolt the council into some sensible action.
