A second weekend of work in the northbound Tyne Tunnel has been cancelled after contractors finished the work early.
Bosses of the tunnel had been expecting two weekend closures of the tunnel – with the second to be over this weekend (April 24 to 26).

But after contractors finished the work in half of the allocated time, it will not be required and both Tyne Tunnels will operate as normal.
A contraflow system was in operation at the weekend, with traffic in both directions using the southbound tunnel, while repairs were carried out to tunnel equipment previously damaged by a large goods vehicle.
Tunnel operations manager Stuart Sutton said: “The work has been completed in one weekend, rather than the expected two, meaning the single lane contraflow will not now be necessary this weekend and both tunnels will be open as normal.
“Work had been scheduled to take place at times when the average traffic flow was 50 per cent of peak levels.
“This is great news for motorists using the A19 and we thank those who used the tunnel over the course of the past weekend for their patience.”
