Residents in Newcastle are among the most generous in the UK, new research has revealed.

In 2014, the average adult in Newcastle spent £479.51 on gifting occasions.

But according to the One4all Gift Card Gifting Index, adults are now predicting a spend £496.12 typically on presents outside of birthdays and Christmas – a four per cent increase.

Both of these figures are significantly higher than the UK national averages of £370.67 and £397.37 respectively.

The study by One4all, the Post Office Gift Card, quizzed 1,732 UK adults on their gifting habits.

In Newcastle, Mother’s Day was the most popular gifting occasion, followed by Father’s Day, baby births, wedding anniversaries and new homes.

Declan Byrne, managing director at One4all, the Post Office Gift Card, said: “It’s interesting to see that consumer confidence is growing to the extent that we are not only investing in ourselves, but other people.

“It’s fantastic that people in Newcastle are starting to feel like they can spend again – and even better to see that being played out in our generosity as a nation.”

“Newcastle should be proud that it is among the most generous cities in the UK, setting the example when it comes to thinking of, and investing in, loved ones’ happiness.”

Newcastle was found to be the third most generous city, behind Aberdeen and Belfast, typically spending £896 and £886 respectively on gifts per year.
