Rowing club to celebrate 150th year

An organisation which has helped people keep fit and make friends is celebrating a major milestone.

Tynemouth Rowing Club is celebrating its 150th anniversary in 2017.

Tynemouth Rowing Club is marking its 150th anniversary this year with a host of events.

Established in 1867, the club based at Tynemouth Haven has enjoyed a long tradition of rowing on the Tyne.

It’s most notable rower William Fawcus, who was coached by James Renforth, was the first provincial sculler to win the Diamond Sculls and the Wingfield Sculls at Henley Royal Regatta.

he club is holding a special anniversary dinner at the Grand Hotel, Tynemouth, on Saturday where they will release the ‘Rowing the Waves’ project.

On Sunday, the club is holding an open day from 10am to 1pm.

Future events include the Invitational Regatta on July 22; an Explore League Regatta on August 6; a Ceilidh on August 19; and the Great Tyne Row on September 2.
