Drivers have been forced to check their care fuel after a tanker filled up a petrol pump with diesel instead of petrol.
The mistake was made at the forecourt of Sainsbury’s petrol station in West Monkseaton on Wednesday.
It is not known how many cars were affected by the error, and motorists have been assured the pumps have been refilled properly.
A Sainsbury’s spokesperson said: “As soon as we became aware of this isolated incident we immediately closed the affected pumps at our Whitley Bay filling station.
“All pumps have now re-opened and we are working with our suppliers to prevent this from happening again. We’re very sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused.”
