Scheme aims to improve safety on A19

Work is to begin later this month on three sections of the A19 to help improve road safety.

It is part of a £2.7m government scheme which will see the removal and reinstatement of existing white road markings in both directions as well as the replacement of road studs where required.

Work will take place on the A19 from the Howdon interchange to Moor Farm from February 16 to 27; from Moor Farm to Fisher Lane from March 2 to 17; and A19 Killingworth interchange, northbound entry slip only, on March 16 and 17.

All work will take place between 8pm to 6am, Monday to Friday.

There will be road, lane and slip road closures with signed diversions in place.

Officials at the Highways Agency says the work will lead to increased visibility on the roads.

Highways Agency project manager Chris Corcoran said: “Safety is our top priority and these four schemes will ensure drivers have increased visibility on our road network.

“The work will take place overnight to minimise disruption to motorists and we ask that they drive carefully and follow the clearly signed diversion routes.”
