Scheme helps to keep estates clean

A scheme to help keep the borough clean has been hailed a success after nearly 200 tonnes of rubbish was removed in a year.

North Tyneside Council introduced the Estate Clean-Up programme last July, bringing together the authority’s environmental and leisure service and North Tyneside Homes to ensure estates are clean, safe and well-maintained.

In the last 12 months, 415 streets have been visited resulting in 194 tonnes of rubbish being removed.

Mayor Norma Redfearn said: “We established the specialist service as a direct result of conversations with residents, so it’s brilliant that it’s proving to be successful.

“As well as thanking the team members, I must also extend my thanks to the public, who have been very supportive of the initiative.”

The scheme has also seen wardens tackling and taking away fly-tipping, removing graffiti, installing ‘no dog fouling’ signs and issuing fixed penalty notices to those seen littering or people failing to pick up after their dog.

Coun John Harrison, cabinet member for housing and the environment, added: “We very much welcome feedback and encourage residents to have a say about where they live.

“I am thrilled with how well the scheme is going. It really is a two-way service; it is a priority for the council to ensure we can have face-to-face conversations with members of the public and listen and respond to any issues they raise.”

Another 185 streets are set to be visited as part of the clean-up programme, over the next coming months.

During the visits, council officers will be on hand to inform residents how to have an active involvement in improving their estate, including joining in with council-led litter picks as well as being invited to organise their own clean-up event.
