There could be trying times ahead for a school rugby team after reaching the quarter finals of a national competition.
Whitley Bay High School’s Year 9 boys’ rugby league team has made it through to the knock-out stages in the RFL Champion Schools competition.
The youngsters demolished local opponents in the county round, before defeating two teams south of the river – Whitburn Academy and the Venerable Bede Academy – in the North East heats at Kingston Park.
Now they will face the third-seeded team from Yorkshire in a match at Sheffield Hallam University on January 28.
Coach Carl Cockburn said: “I’m incredibly proud of everything the boys have achieved.
“They’ve worked really hard to get where they are and they’ve put in some barnstorming performances.”
