Seal is rescued off island rocks

Three organisations were involved in the rescue of an injured seal after it got caught in a net.

Members of the British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR), St Mary’s Seal Watch and Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade (TVLB) were called out at 12.15pm on Sunday, July 5, after reports of a seal being in trouble on rocks at St Mary’s Island.

A spokesman for the
TVLB said: “Brigade members donned water rescue kit and worked with their colleagues to safely approach and secure the seal.

“The fishing line that had become stuck around the seal’s neck was cut free and, once everyone was in a safe position, the now somewhat-agitated and confused seal was released and made its way back into the sea.”
