A liferaft found on rocks sparked a coastal search by rescue teams.

Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade (TVLB) were called out just after noon last Wednesday, after the raft – designed to hold eight people – was found on rocks just to the east of Fish Quay Sands at North Shields.

A search of the raft found survival packs and out-of-date flares.

A TVLB spokesperson said: “All the markings and serial numbers were passed to the Coastguard, along with photographs to aid them in their inquiries.”

TVLB members stood down from the search at 3pm after being unable to confirm the origin of the liferaft.
