A project to install a kiosk and toilets on Cullercoats bay have been put on hold to allow for more consultation.
Diggers were on the beach on Monday ready to start work on erecting a stall and toilets.
But residents and workers around the seafront complained and a meeting was held on Monday afternoon to discuss the work.
As a result of the meeting the project was put on hold until further notice.
Concerns had been raised by fishermen in the area, as well as other business.
The plans form part of a regeneration project for Cullercoats, which started earlier this year.
A spokesperson for North Tyneside Council confirmed the postponement.
They said: “Work to replace the toilet facilities and a new kiosk at Cullercoats bay has not proceeded because of objections to the plans from local businesses and fishermen.
“The council will be considering these objections and will work to ensure there are improved facilities at the earliest opportunity.
