A last gasp victory for North Shields over Whitby saw them go second in the league table .

Shields were trailing 22-23 with just a minute left on the clock when the visitors infringed at the breakdown, allowing Shields the opportunity to kick for the match.

Fly half Jack Rendles stepped up and calmly slotted the resulting kick in the last play of the game, giving the blue and whites a narrow 25-23 victory.

Shields, after two well deserved victories in their previous two matches, went into the game with a degree of confidence, but they knew that Whitby, also with two wins under their belt, would be no pushover.

And so it proved, Shields trailing 23-15 before they staged their late fightback to win the match.
