Ship visit a dream come true

A cruise liner used as the setting for a hit German TV show paid a visit to North Tyneside on Friday.

The Deutschland, star of the long-running drama series Das Traumschiff, was at the Port of Tyne in North Shields for a stopover.

The liner has featured in Das Traumschiff, German for the dream ship, for the last 13 years – almost half of its 31-year run on TV.

Mike Nicholson, harbourmaster at the port, said: “We are pleased that another new cruise operator has been encouraged to visit the Port of Tyne, making a record 37 cruise calls for 2012.”

The Deutschland, styled like an art deco hotel, will be the official hospitality ship for the German Olympic committee during this summer’s London games.

Passengers aboard the Peter Deilmann-owned ship, Germany’s most famous cruise liner, used North Shields as a base for trips to Newcastle city centre, Hadrian’s Wall and Alnwick Castle.
