A COMMUNITY campaigner from Whitley Bay has been given a top award in recognition of her work highlighting breast cancer.
Shirley Hallam received a National Community Ambassador Award at the awards ceremony at the House of Lords for her work over the last four years for Breast Cancer Campaign.
The joint president of Soroptimist International Tynemouth, Whitley Bay and District has worked with a number of organisations to raise awareness of the killer disease.
Shirley has held ‘Paint the Town Pink’ events and helped raise nearly £20,000 thanks to her work with North Tyneside Council; Whitley Bay, North Shields and Wallsend chambers of trade; Whitley Bay FC; Earsdon Plant Centre; and more.
She said: “I have met some wonderful survivors in the community and they have shared their stories with me.
“Raising awareness in this area is vital because NHS figures show that cancer is still one of our killer diseases.
“I am delighted to receive this award that acknowledges my community service as well as the amazing support that I have had throughout the last four years but I am not finished yet.”
More pink-themed events are being lined up across the borough in October.
