Sports plans beginning to take shape

PLANS to bring new sports and leisure facilities to Seaton Burn are moving forward.

The proposals to deliver a new sports and leisure complex including golf, football and play facilities are being developed by Barmoor Ltd.

And on Monday, North Tyneside Council’s cabinet will be asked to approve a long-term lease of its land at Seaton Burn Recreation Ground to Barmoor to enable the company to proceed with the scheme.

Mayor Linda Arkley said: “This proposal is a great demonstration of localism in action, and local individuals, groups and organisations have come together to back this scheme and help drive the project forward.

“It hopefully won’t be long before residents can enjoy the significant benefits that this new development will bring.”

The council has owned land at the recreation ground since 2003, with current facilities including a cricket pitch, football pitch, bowling green, car park and dilapidated changing pavilion.

In Barmoor Ltd’s plans, which secured outline planning permission last year, they want to develop new facilities within the recreation ground and adjacent land.

The proposals include a 36-bay golf driving range; a nine-hole, par-three pitch and putt golf course; a golf clubhouse; ten, all-weather, five-a-side football pitches and changing rooms; a replacement changing pavilion; a children’s play area; and new car parking.

The plans will also see the retention of the existing bowling green, cricket pitch and football.

A Community Use Agreement, which forms part of the planning permission, will ensure that the facility will be open and accessible for local use.
