Staff left shaken after attempted robbery

A robber was left empty handed after targeting a building society.

A man entered the Nationwide Building Society, in High Street East, Wallsend, at 4.20pm on Monday.

He demanded cash and threatened staff, before fleeing empty handed.

Staff were left shaken by the incident.

The man is described as being 6ft tall and of slim build. He was wearing a khaki jacket with the hood up and a scarf covering his face.

Enquiries into the incident are ongoing and police are appealing for anyone with information to contact police.

Detective Inspector, Sharon Chatterton, said: “We appeal to anyone who may have been in High Street East area yesterday at the time of the incident and who may have witnessed the attempted robbery to contact police.

“We have extra officers in the area carrying out enquiries and speaking with people to offer reassurance.

“Anyone with information to help should contact police straight away.”
